– 24 spotlights

Spotlights have been installed just above the water on both sides of the canal to create lines of light on the surface of the water. The spotlights are staggered on the banks so that the beams interlock to form a sort of »zipper«.
At dusk the lines only show up quite faintly on the surface of the water. The darker it grows, the more clearly visible they become—until, when it is entirely dark, crisp white lines show up sharply against the dark surface.
The motion of the water keeps the lines of light changing continually. When ships pass through the area, the arrangement dissolves entirely and is not reconstituted until the waters have calmed.
The interlocking lines of light evoke the former border between East and West Berlin. The fleeting, unresolved character of the lines, however, refers to the resolution of that historic conflict situation.
